**New Programme for January - June 2010!**
SPIRITUAL HEALING
What is
healing?
Healing is a flow of
energy. Some believe it to originate from a Divine Source - from God or some
other higher power; others say that the healing energy is part of the natural
energy that exists within and around us all, sometimes described as the
universal energy field. Others haven’t got a clue where it comes from! It
doesn’t matter what you believe – or don’t believe – healing will have an
effect. Spiritual healing is not the same as faith healing, in which the success
of the treatment depends on the
patient’s faith in
the healer, or in God, or in a specific religion – no religious faith is
required for spiritual healing to work.
What is
a healer?
A healer is a person who
acts as a channel for the healing energy - imagine the healing energy as water,
and the healer as a hosepipe! The healing doesn’t come from the healer
but through him or her.
How long
has healing been practiced?
Healing has been known and
used for thousands of years. It was known to the Chinese as far back as 5000
B.C. and subsequently in virtually every culture. It is now recognised in the
West, and in 1955 healing became an organised therapy in Britain when Harry
Edwards formed the National Federation of Spiritual Healers.
How does
healing work?
The aim of healing is to
restore harmony and an inner balance to the body, mind and spirit – seen as one
interdependent unit - so that healing can take place. Healing also helps to
mobilize the body’s healing capacity and stimulates the internal healing forces
that we all possess but may have temporarily lost.
Healing doesn’t usually
happen instantaneously and “miracle” cures that may have been reported by the
media occur only rarely.
Will
healing make me better?
While no healer can,
or ever should, guarantee a cure, it is true that almost any physical and
emotional condition can be helped to some degree by healing.
Healing
is known to be particularly beneficial for reducing anxiety and easing painful
symptoms, although it should be remembered that sometimes, pain and difficulties
associated with illness of body or mind may have to be tolerated and overcome by
a person as part of his or her life’s learning process. There are, too,
occasions when a person might be reluctant to ‘let go’ of his or her pain: for
example, although someone might desperately want to be free of a chronic pain,
that person may have got so used to the pain that in some unfathomable way it
has become a part of them - or, perhaps without
even realising it, they may
have been using it as an excuse to avoid something unpleasant, or even as a way
of receiving attention.
In its information about
Spiritual healing, the Harry Edwards Spiritual Healing Sanctuary writes: “While
there is no known disease that cannot be helped through Spiritual Healing, no
Spiritual Healing can be effective until the cause has been removed. Healing can
of course, lessen and subdue symptoms, especially pain, but its main purpose is
to overcome the cause of the trouble. Healing is about wellness, not just about
the relief of symptoms.”
What
happens when I receive healing?
You may choose to have
contact (hands on) healing, or prefer hands off healing, where the healer will
place his or her hands a few inches from your body. Although healing is
generally given to the whole body, you may prefer your healer to concentrate on
just one or two specific areas – the choice is completely up to you. When you
are receiving healing you may feel sensations of either heat or cold;
alternatively, you may feel absolutely nothing at all! Most people feel very
relaxed during and after a healing session, others feel energised. As you can
tell, healing works on each person in a different way, because every one of us
is an individual.
Is there
anything I can do to help?
All healing is much more
effective when you participate fully in your own healing process. You can give
you body support by eating good, nourishing food, exercising if possible, and
trying to avoid too many toxins, and you can care for the rest of yourself with
practices such as meditation and relaxation techniques that will help you become
closer to your spiritual self.
Does it
matter if I am receiving conventional medicine or any other treatment?
Healing works well as
a complement to most other therapies. It should also be regarded as
complementary to orthodox medicine and the two can work very happily and
successfully alongside one another. Healing does not diagnose or offer any
advice on treatment but for those who are receiving medical treatment, it helps
them to derive the greatest possible advantage from it.
In different ways and at different times we will all
eventually come to recognise that, together with our physical and emotional
selves, we are all true spiritual beings. Healing acts on the whole person each
of us is, restoring balance, opening our hearts, bringing love and calm.
